Waiting For – Rage

After the new Rage trailer shown at QuakeCon 2009, id Software shows once again who the king of FPS is. If i were a major games developer, I’d feel threatened. Very threatened. And I’d make damn sure my game was nowhere near release when Rage is due release. This is id Sofware we’re talking about here, they have yet to flop a in-house developed game.

I didn’t have any high expectations towards Rage when I first heard of the game, in fact I was more excited when I heard news of Doom 4. I going to be honest and say that even though I am a fanboy, I thought that id should maybe stick to their already existing franchises. But that’s changed, oh yes, that’s changed indeed. The new Rage trailer made me soil myself!

Rage is set in a post-apocalyptic world recovering from an asteroid impact. The character you play is the only survivor of an underground Ark built to survive the asteroid-apocalypse, and at such his body is of course full of nanotechnology that helps the character heal and also revive himself should he fall in combat.

He’s also known to be sporting an Ark suit. This suit, the Authority, which is the proclaimed authority of the wasteland, isn’t too fond of seeing, which again draws unwanted attention towards the character. And so the story begins, I’m informed. Buggy racing, deep story with heavy character interaction and of course(!) what id Software is most famous for, the mayhem that is blasting away at soft things with a pulse!

This all seems very familiar, don’t it? Kinda Wastelandish… like Fallout 3? Well, yes it does. But let’s not forget that Rage is being developed by id Software! Despite the two game’s similarities, I honestly belive Rage will be the greater of the two. Id Software has defined and re-defined genres before, and I don’t think they will have any problems doing that this time either.
