Steam Banning CoD:MW2 Keys

20 Nov
2009

Great news, huh?

Steam has decided to ban all online keystore purchased Steam activation keys for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This, in my very honest opinion, has Activision written all over it. The money hungry games publisher giant once again shows the gaming community that they don’t give a flying fuck about anything else other than profit.

Apparently, the keys being sold through these keystores are actual legit Steam and MW2 retail box codes, but only meant for the Asian market. The keystores have most likely purchased large quantities of these and are stripping the licence codes and selling them on their online stores.

So, there’s no theft involved and there’s no illegal activity here as far as I can tell.
But what I honestly think is happening here, is that Activision aren’t happy with the fact that there are cheap MW2 copies around, and thus banning the Asian keys activated in the rest of the world and forcing the gamers to purchase their extremely overpriced and bug infested game via Steam or “Authorized Retailers” only.

Key factor: Money.

This is so unfair towards the end user, or consumer if you will.
Instead of shutting down the user, they should be going after the seller of these keys, if they have any legit reason to do any of this at all. The user has legally bought a key, and is not to blame.

Activision and Infinity Ward can only thank themselves for any eventual lost revenue before and after this. Their game is overpriced and scares many potential buyers away, and now many who did purchase a key from an online keystore will most likely think twice about getting the game.

One good thing is that refunds are being handed out, and for those who actually didn’t like the game after purchase, they can concider this a “try before you buy” thing!

You see that trackback link over this post?
They obviously missed the point and didn’t read properly.

No piracy has been done, and no criminal activity.
All legit keys, from Asian market versions of MW2.

They need one good laywer to sue them down for that cause they are selling purple air for money and they dont apply their legal promises as support and many things they never test the games how the hell you sell a game before you test it on grand scale?they have handreds employs wtf they do they are This are not game companys remind me copy stealers who make games from Platfomr to Pc and opposite with thousand bugs.
Im was a game designer consulter and left the buisness for that reasons
they know they game sucks but they sell it they know noone will take them to courts…guess what..if i manage to get rich one i will bring down to the courts of law games companys cause they are pure Thiefs and posers of old GOOD gaming designers..(plus there are some small game designer company one day they will eat them down cause they will make more stable games and lower prices.Old game companys will fall soon…i wish them that greedy bastardsS!

Umm… yeah..?
Not quite sure what you’re saying here, dude.

If I read it correctly, you’re saying they overcharged for the game.
I agree on this, but I’m also getting much of my money’s worth.
So I, like I’ve stated before, have very mixed feelings about this matter.

?

I’m not sure if you’re kidding and I should ignore you, or if you’re really asking how to play online for real…

Well, there’s three options when launching CoD:MW2:
Spec-Ops, For The Record and Multiplayer.

Click Multiplayer…

I was just considering buying an online key, im really glad i read this thanks alot. my account got banned due to me downloading a bad version of a manual World at war update(had a trojan and mal/sc). was playing Cod MW2 while it was unpacking and i they said i was attempting to cheat… i have had my steam account for over 5 years and have been in good standing the entire time. now they are saying that they know what cheat was used and they are not going to discuss it. WTF, if they “know” what it was and arnt going to unbann my account why cant they just tell me. i think that they are intentionally sabotaging thier own game updates.

It’s safe to buy the online keys now as far as I know.

But you will need a new account if they banned your entire Steam account.
I hop you backed up your MW2 profile and can use it on the new account.
